Located in Ashburn, Virginia, this 5 bedroom home was completely remodeled and updated with a neutral palette of whites, gray-beige and natural wood. In addition to optimizing the overall space, bringing in more natural light and creating new sight lines was the goal.
A neutral color palette was used throughout, with the old oak floor updated in a walnut wood color adding warmth and balance to the neutral tones. New windows were added to both update and improve the natural light sources. The rectangular arch was optimized to allow for increased visibility of the dining room.
The dining room was given a new lease on life and light by eliminating a dividing wall to the kitchen. An archway to the living room was expanded and the result was beautiful new sight lines in both directions.
Recessed lighting was installed in the home office to the right of the front door and new windows were installed. A new French door provided additional transparency and natural light.
The kitchen was designed to optimize the available space. White Shaker cabinets and white quartz counter tops providing ample storage are offset against a beautiful walnut colored flooring. New larger windows added more natural light. The old walk-in pantry was eliminated and replaced with a new wall of cabinetry with counter top work space. The refrigerator was given a dedicated walled-in space.
The Family Room focuses on a brick-faced fireplace which was originally wood-burning and was updated to natural gas. The original red brick overmantel and hearthstone was painted in a neutral shade. New recessed lighting provided improved illumination. New windows and doors were installed and a new sight line was created by removing the old kitchen cabinetry installed up to the ceiling. A raised level breakfast nook provides additional functionality to the kitchen area.
The Master Bedroom Suite consists of the spacious bedroom, a large walk-in closet and very spacious bathroom. Finishes were chosen with luxury, durability and sustainability in mind. Light wall sconces were added to the bed wall and a new ceiling fan installed. In the bathroom, a large shower enclosure features travertine tiling and luxurious fixtures. A free standing tub provides additional visual space and him and hers vanity cabinets add ample storage.
Three additional bedrooms on the upper floor provide for a large family to live comfortably. A hall bathroom serves these three bedrooms.
The basement space planning was focused on providing options to have either an extended family living space or to create a space for separate living. An open-sided full bathroom provides flexibility from both the bedroom and living room areas. An ample egress window was installed in the bedroom for natural light. This is an unusually well illuminated basement with a surprising amount of natural light considering it is not a walk-out. The neutral color scheme is a very important contributor to this.
